Labor and delivery
First stage of labor: This is the longest stage, during which the cervix gradually opens (dilates) and effaces (thins out). It is further divided into early labor, active labor, and transition. Early labor is characterized by irregular contractions and cervical dilation up to around 3-4 centimeters. Active labor begins when the cervix is around 6 centimeters dilated and contractions become more intense and regular. Transition is the final part of the first stage, during which the cervix dilates fully to 10 centimeters.
