CHAPTER 1 – Get a lightbulb to light

In this chapter, you are asked to try to get a lightbulb to light with only one AA battery and one wire. From this experiment, you will learn what a circuit is and how it is formed. Introduced with this project which seems easy but actually requires thinking, users will learn about the conditions of creating current in an electric circuit.

CHAPTER 2,8 – Series Circuits & Parallel Circuits

In these chapters, you will be guided to hook up a Series Circuit and a Parallel Circuit with batteries, lightbulbs, switches and wires. By making the circuits, you will learn about the difference between Series Circuits and Parallel Circuits, the basic rules they obey and how they are used in real-world physics.

CHAPTER 3,7 – Use of an Ammeter and a Voltmeter

In these chapters, you will be guided to measure the current in a circuit and the voltage drop across a portion of a circuit. From these activities, you will learn about how to use an ammeter and a voltmeter, how to read the reading, how to draw a circuit diagram and what a short circuit is.

CHAPTER 5,6,9,10 – Voltage, Current, Resistance

In these chapters, you will be introduced to Resistance and Potentiometers. By doing experiments and recording the results by making diagrams, you will investigate the mathematical relationships between voltage and current and between resistance and current. Finally we come to the introduction of Ohm’s law and finish these chapters with a measurement of an unknown resistance by the Current-Voltage method.

CHAPTER 11 – Learning about magnets

You may have observed some effects of magnetism by playing with a magnet. In this chapter, you will learn about the general properties of magnets.

When a magnet touches a nail, smaller metal pieces can be attracted to the nail, as shown in the picture. The nail itself becomes a magnet which causes the nail to become polarized. If you pull away the magnet, the nail loses some of its magnetization and will no longer exhibit as much attraction for other metal objects.

If you touch a magnet to a piece of soft iron (iron with a low carbon content) replacing the nail, after you pull away the magnet, the iron loses all of its attraction for the other metal objects. This is because soft iron is a temporary magnet.

CHAPTER 16 – Electric Generators

Did you know a motor can also be used to generate electricity? In this experiment, you will make a hand-crank generator with an electric motor and learn about the working principle of electric generators. The electric generator, invented by Michael Faraday, converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. An electric generator consists of a number of wire loops placed in a strong magnetic field, which is similar to the electric motor. When the wire loops rotate, it cuts magnetic field lines. So the current is generated in a circuit.

CHAPTER 17 – Fruit Battery

In this experiment, you will make a battery with fruits and learn about the principle of the wet cell battery. The chemistry behind the fruit cell is that zinc is more reactive than copper which means zinc loses electrons more easily than copper. As a result, oxidation occurs in the zinc metal strip and zinc metal loses electrons which then become zinc ions. The electrons then flow from the zinc strip to the copper strip through an external circuit.

CHAPTER 18 – Building an Electric Bell

In this experiment, you will build an electric bell with batteries and a solenoid and learn the mechanics of the original ranging bell. When the switch is pressed, current flows around the circuit. The soft iron core is magnetized by the magnetic field produced by the current in the coil. Then soft iron armature is attracted and moves towards the soft iron core. Hammer moves to hit the gong and produce a sound. Contacts open to switch off the current. Soft iron core loses its magnetism. Spring brings the soft iron armature back to its original position. Contacts will close to switch on the current again. The process repeats so the bell keeps ringing.
